ArtHouse Design had the opportunity to send two team members to the International Sign Association’s 2017 Expo in Las Vegas, Nevada as part of the Experiential Design Program (XDP). This convention is one of the biggest in the sign industry. According to the International Sign Association, “ISA International Sign Expo is the only place to find everything you need to be successful in the sign, graphics and visual communications industry […]. It’s also the best place to get up to speed on important industry issues and the best venue to conduct business. Learning opportunities abound at the show, with expert-led sign industry specific educational programs focusing on topics such as graphic design, sign code legislation, business management, sales and marketing, technology and more.” This year the National Sign Research Education Conference (NSREC) was combined with the ISA Sign Expo, contributing thoughtful lectures on such topics as digital wayfinding, visual attentiveness in placemaking and sign code development to the event. Aaron and Anaïs spent three days learning about new products and fabrication techniques, as well as networking with fabricators and other designers. The XDP program grouped together designers, city planners, suppliers and fabricators to encourage collaboration. Two representatives from Yesco guided Aaron and Anaïs’s team through the exhibition hall bringing colorful commentary and perspective on the products. One highlight of the tour was a demonstration of 3M’s Visual Attention Software (VAS). Using algorithms VAS simulates what people see during the first 3-5 seconds of viewing an area, thus helping designers make informed decisions on sign placement and design. Aaron and Anaïs had a great time getting to know their team at various networking events in a host of Vegas’ best venues, including the Shark Tank and House of Blues. They also found the time to visit the impressive Neon Museum.
